Strategic Partnership Aims to Boost Efficiency, Sustainability, and Innovation in the Wood Processing Sector
According to a news article in Panels and Furniture Asia, Hexion, a global leader in adhesives and performance materials, has acquired Smartech, a technology company specialising in AI-powered autonomous manufacturing solutions. This marks Hexion’s first acquisition in a decade and represents a pivotal move toward advancing manufacturing capabilities across various industries, including wood processing.
“This partnership combines Smartech’s cutting-edge AI technologies with Hexion’s expertise in resins and wood processing, setting the stage for transformative gains in production efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability,” said Michael Lefenfeld, Hexion’s President and CEO.
Smartech’s patented systems, such as SmartWAX, SmartPF, and SmartMDI, are known for optimising manufacturing processes by leveraging AI, advanced control systems, and process optimisation algorithms. Notably, the SmartMDI system enables precise resin application in engineered wood production, reducing material costs by over 15% per mill while lowering VOC emissions.
Hannah Magid, CEO of Smartech, highlighted the shared vision between the two companies: “Together, we aim to redefine industry standards, balancing cost efficiency, plant modernisation, and environmental responsibility.”
The acquisition aligns with Hexion’s long-term strategy under the leadership of American Securities, which acquired the company in 2022. By integrating Smartech’s technologies, Hexion is poised to lead advancements in adhesives, construction, and building materials, delivering immediate value to customers while fostering sustainable, smart manufacturing.
Smartech will continue to operate independently, maintaining its current customer relationships.
